FAQ

24 in Your Car is a 24 hour Live-In-Your-Car-A-Thon. Like a marathon or  a walk-a-thon, you gather sponsorships from friends and family ($1 per hour=$24 per sponsor) and take part in an event that gives you a taste of what it is like to have to live in your car. Over the course of 24 hours you will hear testimonies, music and energizing speakers. You will have a chance to record video testimonies, work on service projects, and participate in discussion groups. You will experience what a convenience store diet means and just how little room your car has when you sleep in it.  You will be stretched and challenged. You will want to laugh, cry and reflect. You will leave forever changed.

What is the purpose of 24 in Your Car?

24 in Your Car is an event experience to bring awareness to the growing population of women and children living in their cars, to educate about the reasons behind those who are calling their car “home”, and to impact individuals through an experience that will inspire them to be the voice of change for the “hidden homeless.”

What does it mean “Powered by Shepherd’s Gate”?

Since 1984, Shepherd’s Gate has provided Christ-centered services and housing to over 10,000 battered and homeless women and children. Shepherd’s Gate provides a safe haven for women and their children who are homeless because of abusive relationships, addictions, loss of financial support and other factors and operates two campus locations–one in Livermore, CA and Brentwood, CA as well as a Thrift Store in Livermore, CA. For more information please visit www.shepherdsgate.org. 24 in Your Car was created by Shepherd’s Gate to raise awareness and funds to help solve the rising problem of families having to live in their cars.

How does 24 in Your Car help Shepherd’s Gate?

24 in Your Car will raise awareness about the need for the services that Shepherd’s Gate provides. It will call on participants to take action by praying, volunteering, sharing the information with others, and giving. Participants will be asked to get pledges for the 24 hours they spend living out of their cars. One sponsor giving one dollar an hour for the full 24 hours will help provide food and shelter for a women and child for one day so that they don’t have to experience those 24 hours in their car.

How can I sign up?

Click on the Sign Up tab on the top and register your youth group, business, church, family, or yourself to participate in 24 in Your Car. You will register for a “parking spot” for a $24 fee.  On the registration form you will indicate how many people are in your group so that we are sure to have the correct number of registration forms and pledge collection packets sent to you. If your group is bringing more than one car, you need to register and pay the fee for each car.

What does registering get me?

An opportunity for a life changing event! You will also be provided with snacks Saturday afternoon, dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. Please eat lunch on Saturday before arriving. Just a reminder, you will be living out of your car and will not have the opportunity for fine dining. Your meals will reflect a convenience store style which may not leave you entirely satisfied. You will also receive a 24 in Your Car shirt and access to all of the programs through the 24 hours.

What if I want to attend and volunteer?

Volunteers are critical to this event and we would love to have you volunteer as well as attend. Please see the link above for volunteer opportunities.

Do I need to have a chaperon?

All minors, under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by either a parent, guardian, or group chaperone for each car. Youth groups will need to have chaperones to monitor their group. All underage participants also must have their parents sign their registration release form in order to attend the event.

What should I bring?

Your signed registration form, release form and your pledge envelope, our goal is to have each participant gather at least 2 sponsorships @$24 each–$1 for each hour of the event. Whatever you need to sleep in your car including sleeping bags and pillows. Port-o-potties with a hand-washing station will be available, but there will be no showers or extra rooms for changing. You will also want to bring a lawn or folding chair and flashlight.

What should I not bring?

No pets will be allowed at the fairgrounds with the exception of service animals. Do not bring alcohol, drugs, loud stereo systems, motorized bikes, bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, scooters, knives or weapons.

Will I be able to leave Sunday morning in time for church?

We will have an early morning wrap up session and breakfast and then those that wish to leave are able to do so around 8:30am. We will have a small service Sunday morning at 8:30am if you wish to stay at the fairgrounds. We do encourage everyone leaving early to go to church to share with those in the congregation and the pastor about your experience and where you slept the night before.
